Ben had been saying for years, “there are NO good grey fabrics”. Thanksgiving 2008, I happened to go to three different quilt stores (because my mom was in town and could watch the baby and suddenly 2 hours to myself seemed the very height of decadent luxury) and they all had grey fabrics. They came from 6 or 7 different lines and I can’t tell you now what they all are, but they actually seemed to coordinate, and I bought fat quarters and some yardage.
Some, as you can see, are modern fabrics from Amy Butler. Some are from “traditional” fabric lines, like the grey I used for the sashing. I love how it all turned out. It was a very quick quilt to make, but the layout took some attention so that everything seemed balanced.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the solid colors, but to my eye and taste, I really like the prints that read as solid, but have some texture to them. This grey fabric I used has small rectangles in it, that give it depth and texture, but look like a solid at first. I have been looking for these types of prints as stash builders for ages–good ones are hard to find.
