I showed this before it was quilted, but now it’s all finished and I am ready to show it off. This is for my toddler, and I wanted something that was simple enough that I would not be sad if she hated it and I would regret piecing a thousand tiny things, but I still wanted it to be cool enough that *I* could live with it. I think this worked out pretty well.

The finished top. You can’t see in this photo, but I have quilted a four-pointed star into the oculus. I also set the center motif off with some straight-line work and hooked feathers.
And here’s a picture of the medallion that is more easily seen from the back:

It’s a medallion. With peacock feathers. It’s also inside the center motif on the front, so it’s about 3 feet from one point to the other.

The pieced back. It reminds me of rainbow sherbet, which is a favorite of my kids. And seriously… I used to love it, too, but now I find it sickeningly sweet and kinda chemically-tasting. Sad. At least the colors are pretty, right?
As for the name? Yeah, I am a dyed-in-the-wool nerd. All of my quilt designs tend to be based on ancient sources, and this one is no different. “Oculus” is the Latin word for “eye”, which is what the round opening in a ceiling is called. Good inspiration for design is everywhere, just keep your eyes open.
