SO I was sewing along on a binding when all of a sudden I heard a sound that can only be described as “”sproi-chunk”, and my tension assembly just … stopped working. At all. Upon further investigation, a tiny piece of plastic fell off into my hand from inside the machine. I’ll be dropping it off tomorrow. After 13 years of faithful service and zero problems, this kind of caught me unawares!
Not sure if this means I’m in the market for a new machine. What are your recommendations? I don’t need harp space for FMQ because I have a longarm, and I want something that can stand up to heavy use (and which can do more than a straight stitch for applique and stuff). What are your faves, everyone? What should I look at? I have Bernina, Janome and Juki within a mile, and would be willing to travel for others.

I just love my Bernina 710.
Mandy says
Leona, how long have you had your 710 again?
Molly says
BERNINA… all the way. I have had my little bottom of the line activa 210 for the past 4 years- she has a tiny throat yet I have done queen sized quilts on her- and she is the most sturdy reliable machine ever- I keep her clean and well oiled and I have never had to service her either….and we are talking millions of stitches…. millions. she is a dream- go BERNINA… you won’t regret it.

I am scheduled to go check one out soon. I have also been looking at the Juki semi-industrial straight stitch only machines. I also want to check out the Janomes again, because until mine had this little issue, I had her for 13 years with no problem at all. Much to think about.

I also have the juki 2000qi- and it is an amazing machine- but it is a little frustrating not to even have a zig zag- just a thought. I really do like it though, it is super fast and powerful and the throat is plenty big enough for quilting if you ever wanted to use it for that. Angela has a newer Janome and could probably tell you more about it.
