My quilt for RJR

There it is!!  My quilt!

Quilt for RJR, Using 79 different fabrics from their current collections.

Quilt for RJR, Using 79 different fabrics from their current collections.

I made a quilt that was for RJR Fabrics at Quilt Market!  The goal was to put as many fabrics on one quilt as possible, and carry on the theme of “Capture the Moment”.  They were going to have various Polaroid-related accessories, and my quilt was going to be the central motif.  Talk about being excited and a little freaked out!

I made a number of original sketches and plans, some quite elaborate.  In the end, though, with the large number of different lines and fabrics (and another major and unexpected deadline cropped up that I can’t tell you about yet, but it is … really major), I decided to go super simple with the layout and let the fabrics be the center of attention.  This also meant I decided that that the paper pieced Polaroid, which is about 14″ x 16″, was put off to the side instead of placed in the middle, so as not to be the focal point.  I think it worked out really well, in the end.  I used a grosgrain ribbon to make the stripe, and then repeated the rainbow motif on the back.  Here’s a pic of the camera:

This is the best shot I could get, but you still can't see the different whites and greys I used for the fabrics, which helped define some of the larger spaces.

I loved how much fun it was to come up with such a big paper pattern, and I think that I met my goals of making the fabric the highlight.  I *also* got to play around with doing some sketching and shading on the camera using my longarm, which was a ton of fun.  I debated adding some intense quilting since it was a chance to show off, but again, thought it best to keep the fabrics the star, because, really, that was the whole point.

And here’s a picture of the back, because it was fun, too!

Ta-done!

Ta-done!

I think this would be a great quilt for “I Spy”.  I’ll be working on a pattern for it, soon!

Thanks Lisa! Yeah, the thought of piecing that stripe made me a little ill, but the grosgrain was perfect… Thank all that’s holy I actually found it!

Leslie, thank you!! It’s so sweet of you to leave me a note! I had forgotten to leave business cards with them, and realized after the fact that no one would know it was me. I will be writing it up after this next Craftsy class is done filming, after Thanksgiving.

I’ve just come across this amazing quilt on Pinterest and love the idea of it for an “I spy” for my little one. I see in the comments that a pattern was in the works…is it available now?
