- Not sure if the edge of your new piece is going to end up where you want it after you iron it? Line it up where you think it goes, and put a pin or two along the seam where the stitches would go. Fold it back as if you were ironing it to see if it aligns properly. This is particularly good for sewing with angles, and cuts down on basting time.
- Starch: I have come to love doing it. After some trial and error, I found that 3 oz of potato vodka to 8 oz of water works great as a substitute for Best Press cut 50/50 with water. I have to have a scent-free starch (I can’t even wear perfume any more, which makes me super sad), and this really works for me.
- Trust me on this: the removable Command Velcro strips are the bomb for hanging stuff. Not to mention, you don’t actually have to commit to them forever:
- I always use leader fabric, and each time I sew bits and pieces from my scrap bin together when I do it. This gives me huge bunches of “made fabric” for other projects, and it’s always a surprise what comes out.
- Edited to add: Try to avoid sewing a seam with stitches smaller than your narrowest seam ripper, unless you’re confident and/or prepared to cut entirely new pieces.
